Peasenhall Environmental Action Group

Fresh peas. Doodle style

inspired by Biodiversity Action Plans nearby [eg.Kelsale & District Wildlife Action Gp] we will try to set up a group of own.

Aims:

to protect, enhance and where appropriate defend or enlarge species-rich areas within the Village footprint.

We need to assess, measure and record what we already have and prioritise what we need to defend. To start, we have a questionnaire which will try to record what (older) residents remember about the environment hereabouts in the last decade or two. Notice anything missing, or anything new? Remember when you used to have to clean insects off the car window? Remember when the swifts and insect eaters used to stay longer?

Questionnaire – you can print out your comments and email,

or download here.

1. Identifier – who are you, how long have you lived here, what’s the best way to keep in touch with you?

Forename

length of years living in P&S

special interest if any – ponds, plants, trees, birds, mammals, insects

best way to contact you – mobile, email, whatsapp.

Your home/garden – got a bird box, pond, wild area?

Info – do you / would you use Facebook?

2. changes you have noticed over the years (and whether it bothers you) – climate/weather, rainfall, seasonal changes [early late], varieties you cannot grow so well [or better], species you miss or species which have appeared.

3. [wild] areas of the village you think it is worth protecting, enhancing. Leave it to Nature or would you consider planting/seeding?

4. your general attitude to Nature

cut and trim – keep everything tidy?

Minimise interventions – let Nature have space.

Data: some of you record the dates that the swifts arrive every year. Others observe changes but do not necessarily record dates. It’s all useful data. Share with us please.

  • Birds – dates of 1st swift, species you see more of, species you see less of, more unusual (in the past) species.
  • insects – appearance of flying ants, species you see less of, more unusual (in the past) species.
  • wildflowers (whether called weeds or not) / trees – what can you observe about the date of first appearance of flowers and blossom. [ of course dependent on weather].
  • when was the last time you saw a hedgehog?
  • Ponds – how’s the last year been for spawn and frogs?
  • Roadside hedges and verges – your opinion on whether the amount of cutting back is appropriate and done at the right time.
  • Air /climate / water – noticed any changes over the past 5-10 years?
